My scholarship is on the intersections of entrepreneurship, technology, and sustainable economic development.

The central research question guiding my research is: "What is hindering innovative entrepreneurship from improving the world?"

I work on two main research topics in order to answer this question:

·      The Darker Sides of Entrepreneurship; and

·       The Neglected Economics of Artificial Intelligence.

In the first topic, I critique the prevailing notion that sustainable and eco-entrepreneurship represent new growth opportunities. Instead, I from a deep understanding of the relationship between entrepreneurship, technology and development, I argue that this perspective is problematic, linking historical economic growth to fossil fuel reliance and climate change. Key questions raised include the potential collapse of society if the energy transition fails, the need to reconsider neoliberal capitalism, and the compatibility of degrowth with entrepreneurship. My recent publication, "The Economic Decline of the West: Guns, Oil and Oligarchs," argues that the concentration of power and resources, along with military spending and the problematic energy transition, stifles competition and innovation. I explore whether entrepreneurship focused on growth can align with a post-growth society and investigates new models of entrepreneurship suited for a degrowth context.

In the second topic I examine the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the economy. My research highlights the dual nature of AI, which, while potentially aiding in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, may exacerbate ecological issues and deepen the growth obsession among entrepreneurs, and cement the oligarchy. I argue for an economics of AI.

My work will continue to explore the need to address the unsustainable growth-driven economic system, which threatens planetary habitability and well-being amid an oligarchic, fossil fuel-dependent, and militarising global economy.

I joined IZA as a Research Fellow in January 2013.
