Johannes Schwarze was a Professor of Economics at the University of Bamberg from 1997 until 2010. Starting his professional career as a Senior Research Associate at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin, 1989-1997) he received his PhD and post-doctoral degree (habilitation) from the Technical University Berlin in 1989 and 1996.

He joined the IZA Research Fellow network very early (1999) and collaborated with the institute for more than a decade. His numerous publications had a special focus on social policy, income distribution, and subjective well-being.

Johannes Schwarze lost his life at age 51 in a tragic road accident on September 12, 2010. The IZA community will honor his memory.
