Stephen D. O'Connell is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Emory University.

Before he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Economics at MIT. He received his Ph.D. in Economics at the City University of New York - Graduate Center in 2016. His work focuses on how business and political leaders get their start. Stephen has published research on firm creation and productivity as well as the effects of political quota systems in creating career politicians.

Stephen joined IZA as a Research Affiliate in December 2015 and became a Research Fellow in December 2023.
